Ausstellung mit Arbeiten von Bettina von Arnim, Sebastian Stöhrer und Stefan Wieland

Die Frankfurter Galerie Philipp Pflug Contemporary ist im Frühjahr 2026 zu Gast in Berlin und präsentiert in den Räumen von MIETESTROMGAS eine vielschichtige Ausstellung mit drei künstlerischen Positionen, die sich auf unterschiedliche Weise mit Fragen von Wirklichkeit, Materialität und Wahrnehmung auseinandersetzen.

Die Ausstellung wird am 1. Mai 2026 von 18 bis 22 Uhr eröffnet und ist vom 2. Mai bis 13. Juni 2026 in der Ackerstraße 19 in Berlin-Mitte zu sehen.

MIETESTROMGAS ist ein Ort für kuratierte Objekte und Kunst des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts. Gegründet von Patrick Gehlen, verbindet der Berliner Showroom Design, Kunst und Sammlerstücke in einem bewusst eklektischen Ansatz. Im Zentrum steht die Leidenschaft für das Entdecken, Sammeln und Weitergeben besonderer Objekte – getragen von einem kompromisslosen Qualitätsanspruch und einer klaren Absage an Beliebigkeit.

Bettina von Arnim
Die 1940 in Zernikow (Brandenburg) geborene Malerin und Grafikerin zählt zu den eigenständigen Stimmen eines erweiterten Realismus der Nachkriegszeit. Nach Studien in Berlin und Paris sowie einem prägenden Aufenthalt in den USA entwickelte sie eine Bildsprache, die häufig dem „German Pop“ zugeordnet wird, sich jedoch stärker als kritischer, teils dystopischer Realismus lesen lässt. Ihre Arbeiten aus den späten 1960er- und frühen 1970er-Jahren zeigen hybride, technoide Figuren – sogenannte „Maschinenmenschen“ – als Kommentar zu Macht, Entfremdung und gesellschaftlichen Rollenbildern.
Von Arnim war Mitbegründerin der Gruppe Kritischer Realismus – Aspekt und ist Mitglied des Deutschen Künstlerbundes. Ihre Werke befinden sich u. a. in bedeutenden öffentlichen Sammlungen wie der Neuen Nationalgalerie in Berlin oder dem Städel Museum in Frankfurt. Sie lebt und arbeitet heute in Südwestfrankreich.

Sebastian Stöhrer
Der 1968 in Freiburg geborene Künstler lebt und arbeitet in Frankfurt am Main. Er studierte an der Städelschule und leitet dort seit 2017 die Keramikwerkstatt. Stöhrers keramische Skulpturen bewegen sich an der Grenze zwischen organischer und künstlicher Form. Seine Arbeiten erinnern an mikroskopische Lebensformen oder spekulative Kreaturen aus der Science-Fiction und hinterfragen grundlegende Kategorien wie „lebendig“ und „unbelebt“.
Seine Werke waren in internationalen Ausstellungen zu sehen, unter anderem in London, Stockholm und Hongkong. Stöhrer gehört zu einer Generation von Künstlern, die aktuelle Diskurse aus Biologie, Philosophie und Materialforschung in eine eigenständige, sinnlich erfahrbare Form übersetzen.

Stefan Wieland
Stefan Wieland, geboren 1970 in Marburg, lebt und arbeitet ebenfalls in Frankfurt am Main. Nach seinem Studium an der Städelschule wurde er 2002 mit dem Paul-Strecker-Preis ausgezeichnet. Wielands Arbeiten bewegen sich zwischen Skulptur, Design und Installation. Seine charakteristischen „Lampen“ sind poetische, oft humorvolle Objekte aus farbigem Acrylglas, die sich ihrer funktionalen Bestimmung entziehen und stattdessen als autonome Bühnenbilder erscheinen.
Im Wechselspiel von Licht und Material entstehen theatrale Situationen, die Wahrnehmung und Bedeutung verschieben. Wielands Arbeiten zeichnen sich durch eine subtile Verbindung von Alltagsästhetik, Absurdität und narrativer Offenheit aus.

Zur Ausstellung

Die Zusammenstellung der drei Positionen eröffnet einen spannungsreichen Dialog: von Bettina von Arnims gesellschaftskritischen Bildwelten über Sebastian Stöhrers spekulative Organismen bis hin zu Stefan Wielands leuchtenden Objektinszenierungen. Gemeinsam ist den Arbeiten eine Auseinandersetzung mit Übergängen – zwischen Mensch und Maschine, Natur und Artefakt, Funktion und Fiktion.

In der besonderen Atmosphäre von MIETESTROMGAS entfaltet sich eine Ausstellung, die historische Perspektiven mit zeitgenössischen Fragestellungen verbindet und den Raum selbst als kuratorisches Medium mit einbezieht.

Exhibition featuring works by Bettina von Arnim, Sebastian Stöhrer and Stefan Wieland

In spring 2026, Frankfurt-based Galerie Philipp Pflug Contemporary will be a guest in Berlin, presenting a multifaceted exhibition at MIETESTROMGAS. The show brings together three artistic positions that engage, in distinct ways, with questions of reality, materiality and perception.

The exhibition opens on 1 May 2026, from 6 to 10 pm, and will be on view from 2 May to 13 June 2026 at Ackerstraße 19 in Berlin-Mitte.

MIETESTROMGAS is a space dedicated to curated objects and art of the 20th and 21st centuries. Founded by Patrick Gehlen, the Berlin showroom brings together design, art and collectable pieces in a deliberately eclectic approach. At its core lies a passion for discovering, collecting and sharing exceptional objects—guided by an uncompromising commitment to quality and a clear rejection of arbitrariness.

Bettina von Arnim
Born in 1940 in Zernikow (Brandenburg), the painter and printmaker is regarded as a distinctive voice within an expanded form of post-war Realism. Following her studies in Berlin and Paris, as well as a formative stay in the United States, she developed a visual language often associated with “German Pop”, yet more convincingly understood as a critical, at times dystopian, realism. Her works from the late 1960s and early 1970s feature hybrid, technoid figures—so-called “machine people”—serving as a commentary on power, alienation and social roles.

Von Arnim was a co-founder of the group Kritischer Realismus – Aspekt and is a member of the Deutscher Künstlerbund. Her works are held in major public collections, including the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin and the Städel Museum in Frankfurt. She currently lives and works in the south-west of France.

Sebastian Stöhrer
Born in Freiburg in 1968, the artist lives and works in Frankfurt am Main. He studied at the Städelschule, where he has headed the ceramics workshop since 2017. Stöhrer’s ceramic sculptures operate at the boundary between organic and artificial form. His works evoke microscopic life forms or speculative creatures drawn from science fiction, questioning fundamental categories such as the “living” and the “inanimate”.

His work has been exhibited internationally, including in London, Stockholm and Hong Kong. Stöhrer belongs to a generation of artists who translate contemporary discourses from biology, philosophy and material research into a distinct and sensorially engaging visual language.

Stefan Wieland
Born in Marburg in 1970, also lives and works in Frankfurt am Main. After studying at the Städelschule, he was awarded the Paul Strecker Prize in 2002. His work moves fluidly between sculpture, design and installation. His characteristic “lamps” are poetic, often subtly humorous objects made of coloured acrylic glass, which resist functional definition and instead appear as autonomous stage-like settings.

Through the interplay of light and material, Wieland creates theatrical situations that shift perception and meaning. His work is marked by a nuanced synthesis of everyday aesthetics, absurdity and narrative openness.

The Exhibition
The juxtaposition of these three positions opens up a dynamic and thought-provoking dialogue: from Bettina von Arnim’s socially critical pictorial worlds, to Sebastian Stöhrer’s speculative organisms, and Stefan Wieland’s luminous object-based stagings. What unites them is an exploration of transitions—between human and machine, nature and artefact, function and fiction.

Within the distinctive atmosphere of MIETESTROMGAS, the exhibition unfolds as a setting in which historical perspectives intersect with contemporary concerns, while the space itself becomes an integral curatorial medium.
